A 95% curcuminoid extract can be diluted with a carrier back down to, say, 20% or 40% for a particular formulation — and that diluted material is still, accurately, a “turmeric extract powder.” So even within the extract-powder category, the percentage on the label is the only figure that defines what you are buying. Every form of turmeric begins with the same source: the rhizome — the underground stem — of Curcuma longa, a member of the ginger family. Fresh turmeric root is harvested, cured, dried, and milled. Stop there, and you have culinary powder; the curcuminoids remain at their natural 2–5%, locked inside the plant matrix alongside fiber, starch, and essential oils.
To make a standardized Curcuma longa turmeric root extract, that ground material is taken further. Curcuminoids are poorly water-soluble but dissolve in suitable solvents, so the dried rhizome is extracted, the curcuminoid-rich fraction separated and concentrated, and the result purified and dried to a target assay. The further purification is pushed, the higher the curcuminoid percentage and the lower the proportion of the original plant matrix that remains. A 95% curcuminoid extract is therefore a long way, chemically, from the rhizome it started as — even though both can legitimately be called “turmeric.”
This is also why curcuminoid content cannot be raised simply by buying “more concentrated powder.” Once the rhizome is ground, its curcuminoid fraction is fixed by biology. The Bioavailability Caveat
There is one important qualification that concentration alone does not solve. A higher curcuminoid percentage means more active compound per gram — but it does not mean that compound is well absorbed. Curcumin is notoriously difficult for the body to take up: it is poorly water-soluble, rapidly metabolized, and quickly eliminated, so a large share of an oral dose passes through unused.[2] This is true of a 95% extract just as it is of the spice.
