Bulk Passion Fruit Powder Supplier — Freeze-Dried Whole-Fruit & Spray-Dried Juice Powder (Passiflora edulis), USDA & EU Organic Available, B2B Wholesale
Valeherb supplies passion fruit powder (Passiflora edulis Sims) in bulk wholesale — 100% real fruit, not passion flower herb, not a standardized extract. Two grades: freeze-dried whole-fruit powder (Organic available) and spray-dried juice powder with maltodextrin.
Our Two Grades
The drying method is the main decision — it changes colour intensity, vitamin C retention, solubility, and label. Both grades start from real Passiflora edulis. Only the freeze-dried grade is available organic.
| Freeze-Dried Whole-Fruit Powder | Spray-Dried Juice Powder | |
|---|---|---|
| Made from | Whole aril (pulp & juice sacs, seeds removed) | Clarified juice concentrate |
| Carrier | None — 100% fruit | Contains maltodextrin carrier |
| Colour | Deep yellow-orange | Bright yellow to amber |
| Flavour & aroma | Full-spectrum, very intense, full aromatic top notes | Clean, consistent juice character |
| Vitamin C retention | Highest — no heat applied | Some reduction vs freeze-dried |
| Solubility | Disperses well; slight pulp texture | Dissolves instantly; made for drinks |
| Organic | USDA NOP & EU Organic available | Conventional only |
| Single-ingredient label | Yes — 100% passion fruit | No — maltodextrin is declared |
Passion Fruit Powder vs Passion Flower Powder: Which Do You Need?
“Passion powder” is searched for two entirely different products. Mixing them up is the most common buying error in this category.
- Passion fruit powder (Passiflora edulis Sims). Dried fruit aril or juice — a food ingredient. This is what we sell.
- Passion flower powder is a different product. Dried herb of Passiflora incarnata, not the fruit. Positioned in supplements around calming and sleep; subject to dosage guidance and drug-interaction cautions. Different part, different regulatory footing.
- Passion fruit extract powder — a standardized, concentrated extract, not a whole-fruit or juice powder.
- Passion fruit peel powder — a separate fibre by-product. Outside our range.
- Flavoured protein powders (pineapple-passion, etc.) — finished consumer blends. We supply the raw bulk ingredient only.
Colour, Flavour & What Drives Them
The yellow to amber colour comes entirely from fruit-derived carotenoids (β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin) — no added colourants. Both grades perform well as natural yellow colourants in acidic beverage matrices (working pH 2.8–3.5). Freeze-drying under vacuum with no heat preserves the volatile aromatic fraction almost intact, giving the whole-fruit powder its full floral-tart intensity. Spray-drying delivers a cleaner, more consistent juice character — preferred where batch-to-batch colour and flavour consistency matter more than raw aromatic intensity.[2]
Nutritional Composition (Naturally Occurring)
Levels vary with variety, growing conditions, and drying method — these are naturally occurring ranges, not standardized guaranteed values.
| Naturally occurring component | Notes on composition |
|---|---|
| Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) | Typically 30–40 mg / 100 g fresh pulp; purple variety generally higher. Heat-sensitive — better retained in freeze-dried grade.[1] |
| Carotenoids | β-carotene and β-cryptoxanthin are the principal pigment carotenoids, driving the yellow-orange colour. Yellow variety (f. flavicarpa) generally higher in carotenoids. |
| Flavonoids & polyphenols | Quercetin glucosides, luteolin derivatives, and cyanidin-3-glucoside (primarily in purple variety aril) — naturally occurring; levels vary by cultivar.[1] |
| Dietary fibre | Moderate in the whole aril; seeds (removed from our grades) carry the main fibre fraction. |
| Organic acids | Citric and malic acid dominate — responsible for the characteristic tart flavour and the naturally low pH (2.8–3.5 in solution). |
Applications by Category
- Functional beverages & drink mixes: the juice powder grade dissolves instantly and delivers a consistent bright-yellow colour and clean passion fruit note in RTD juices, hydration powders, electrolyte blends, sparkling waters, and powdered drink mixes
- Bubble tea & foodservice: the spray-dried juice powder is a standard ingredient in bubble tea shops, café syrup bases, and foodservice flavour concentrates
- Confectionery & bakery: hard and soft candy, gummies, fruit jellies, macarons, and flavoured coatings; the freeze-dried grade suits premium fillings and centres where full flavour identity matters
- Dairy & frozen desserts: the juice powder blends cleanly into yoghurts, ice cream mixes, and soft-serve bases; freeze-dried adds visible texture to stirred yoghurts and parfaits
- Natural colour — yellow to amber: a naturally sourced carotenoid yellow for brands replacing synthetic colourants in acidic beverage and food matrices
- Nutrition blends & supplement formats: freeze-dried grade for tablet and capsule formats needing a whole-fruit, clean-label tropical ingredient; blends well in multifruit vitamin-C and superfood mixes
Sourcing & QC Criteria
| Parameter | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Species & part | Passiflora edulis Sims — fruit aril or clarified juice, not flower herb, not peel, not a standardized extract | Confirms you are buying the food ingredient, not the supplement herb or a concentrate |
| Drying method & carrier | Freeze-dried (100% fruit, no carrier) vs spray-dried (maltodextrin declared on COA) | Sets vitamin C retention, solubility, flavour intensity, and label declaration |
| Moisture & water activity | <5% moisture (freeze-dried); <4% (spray-dried); aW <0.4 | Controls shelf life, caking risk, and microbial safety |
| Colour consistency | Batch-to-batch colour within agreed specification; carotenoid-based yellow | Natural fruit variation must be controlled at intake for consistent finished-product colour |
| Organic certification | USDA NOP and/or EU Organic — freeze-dried grade only; both the source fruit and the processing facility must be certified | Required for an organic claim; carrier in spray-dried grade is not certified |
| Heavy metals | Pb, As, Cd, Hg via ICP-MS within applicable limits | Standard food-ingredient compliance requirement |
| Pesticide residues | Multi-residue screen to MRLs for destination market (EU, US, Japan) | Mandatory for market entry in regulated jurisdictions |
| Microbiological | TPC, yeast & mould, E. coli, Salmonella | Core food-safety compliance |
Regulatory Guidance
- United States (FDA): P. edulis fruit and juice are conventional food ingredients — no Novel Food restriction. Maltodextrin carrier must be declared in the ingredient list. Note: Passiflora incarnata (passion flower herb) is regulated separately under DSHEA as a dietary supplement — this product is not that plant.
- European Union: Passion fruit has a documented EU consumption history and is not classified as a novel food. Confirm the specific product form in the target jurisdiction before commercialisation. Maltodextrin must be declared per Regulation (EC) 1333/2008.
- China: Passion fruit is listed in China’s food raw materials catalogue. Exported product complies with applicable GB standards, with full export documentation and organic certificates where required.
