Bulk Blueberry Powder Supplier — Freeze-Dried Whole-Fruit & Spray-Dried, USDA & EU Organic Available, B2B Wholesale
Valeherb supplies blueberry fruit powder (Vaccinium corymbosum) in bulk wholesale, made from 100% real blueberries — not flavouring. Two grades are available: a freeze-dried whole-fruit powder and a spray-dried powder with maltodextrin, with USDA NOP and EU Organic options on the freeze-dried grade. Below: a quick-spec panel, the two grades side by side, how blueberry powder differs from extract/juice/seed/leaf powders, and full sourcing criteria.
Our Two Grades
The drying method is the core decision — it changes colour, anthocyanin and vitamin retention, texture, solubility, and label. Both grades are made from real blueberries; organic certification is available for the freeze-dried whole-fruit grade.
| Freeze-Dried Whole-Fruit Powder | Spray-Dried Powder | |
|---|---|---|
| Made from | Whole ripe blueberries (skin included) | Blueberry juice/puree |
| Carrier | None — 100% fruit | Contains maltodextrin carrier |
| Colour | Deep blue-purple | Lighter blue-violet |
| Anthocyanins & vitamin C | Highest retention — closest to fresh fruit on a dry-matter basis | Lower retention than freeze-dried |
| Natural fibre | Higher (skin-inclusive whole fruit) | Lower (juice base) |
| Solubility | Disperses in cold water; some natural fruit fibre | Readily cold-water soluble; smooth dispersion |
| Organic | USDA NOP & EU Organic available | Conventional only |
| Single-ingredient label | Yes — 100% blueberry | No — maltodextrin is declared |
Which “Blueberry Powder” Do You Actually Need?
Several different products are sold under the “blueberry powder” name. Valeherb supplies whole-fruit powder in the two grades above; the others are listed here so you can confirm you are sourcing the right thing.
| Product | Made from | Typical use | Valeherb |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fruit powder — freeze-dried | Whole ripe fruit (skin + pulp) | Natural colour, whole-food nutrition, bakery | Yes |
| Fruit powder — spray-dried juice | Blueberry juice/puree + maltodextrin | Beverages & drink mixes, smooth dispersion | Yes |
| Extract powder | Concentrated / standardized anthocyanin extract | Standardized-actives supplements | Not supplied — different category |
| Seed / leaf powder | Ground seeds, or blueberry leaf | Niche supplement / cosmetic uses | Not supplied |
| Wild (lowbush) powder | Vaccinium angustifolium — smaller, more intense colour | “Wild blueberry” positioning | Not supplied |
Colour, pH & Nutrient Retention
For a blueberry powder, the natural blue-purple colour comes from anthocyanins (mainly delphinidin, malvidin, and cyanidin glycosides), and these pigments behave in ways formulators should plan for. Published comparisons of freeze-dried versus spray-dried blueberry powder found freeze-drying retained markedly more anthocyanin than spray-drying with a maltodextrin carrier,[1] with other work reporting freeze-dried powders holding roughly 1.5× the anthocyanin of spray-dried equivalents.[2] Anthocyanins are also sensitive to pH, heat, light, and oxidation:[1] the colour reads blue-purple near neutral pH and shifts redder and can dull in acidic or high-heat conditions. Confirm your process pH, thermal load, and light/oxygen exposure before setting an inclusion rate, especially in clear acidic beverages.
Nutritional Composition (Naturally Occurring)
As a whole-fruit powder, blueberry powder concentrates the fruit’s natural constituents. Exact levels vary with variety, ripeness, season, and drying method, so the following describes what blueberries naturally contain rather than guaranteed standardized values.
- Anthocyanins — the blue-purple pigments (delphinidin, malvidin, cyanidin and related glycosides) that also function as a natural colour contribution; most concentrated in the skin-inclusive freeze-dried grade
- Vitamin C — naturally present; better retained in freeze-dried than spray-dried/heat-processed powder
- Dietary fibre — present in the whole-fruit freeze-dried grade; lower in the juice-based spray-dried grade
- Other polyphenols and minerals (such as manganese and vitamin K) — naturally occurring constituents of the whole fruit
Applications by Category
- Functional beverages, smoothie & drink mixes: spray-dried powder for fast, lump-free cold-water dispersion and natural blue-violet colour
- Bakery & confectionery: freeze-dried whole-fruit powder for natural colour and authentic blueberry flavour in fillings, glazes, inclusions, and baked goods
- Dairy, yogurt & frozen: yogurt, ice cream, and fermented/plant-based formats wanting natural blueberry colour and flavour
- Smoothie & whole-food nutrition blends: superfood and “açaí/berry”-style powders, sachets, and capsules positioning on whole-fruit, naturally-occurring nutrients
- Natural colour & flavour: anthocyanin-rich freeze-dried powder as a clean-label colour-and-flavour contribution where regulations permit
Sourcing & QC Criteria
| Parameter | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Grade & carrier | Freeze-dried (100% fruit, no carrier) vs spray-dried (maltodextrin declared) | Determines colour, retention, solubility, and label — single-ingredient vs declared carrier |
| Species | Cultivated highbush (V. corymbosum) confirmed on COA | Distinguishes from wild lowbush (V. angustifolium), a different species Valeherb does not supply |
| Drying method | Lyophilization vs spray drying — documented | Directly drives anthocyanin and vitamin-C retention |
| Organic certification | USDA NOP and/or EU Organic (EU 2018/848) covering fruit and processing — freeze-dried whole-fruit grade | Both source and processing must be certified for an organic claim |
| Microbiology & heavy metals | TPC, yeast & mould, E. coli, Salmonella; ICP-MS (Pb, As, Cd, Hg) per batch | Core food-grade requirements for a low-process fruit powder |
| Pesticides | Multi-residue screen for conventional grades; organic via certification audit | Market-entry requirement for EU/US/Japan |
Regulatory Guidance
- United States: Blueberry is an established whole-food ingredient — food use for food applications, DSHEA for supplements. Organic grades require USDA NOP certification covering raw fruit and the processing facility. FDA-registered facility (21 CFR Part 111) for supplement supply
- European Union: Established food use; organic grades require EU Organic certification (EU 2018/848). INCI for cosmetic use: Vaccinium Corymbosum (Blueberry) Fruit Powder
- China: Listed food ingredient; export documentation available, with organic certification provided where required
