Bulk Barley Grass Powder Supplier — Freeze-Dried & Spray-Dried Barley Grass Juice Powder (Hordeum vulgare), USDA & EU Organic Available, B2B Wholesale
Valeherb supplies barley grass powder and barley grass juice powder (Hordeum vulgare L.) in bulk wholesale — three grades covering freeze-dried whole-grass powder (Organic available) and spray-dried juice powder, all made from young barley shoots harvested before the jointing stage. A dense-green, chlorophyll-rich ingredient for greens blends, supplement formats, and functional foods.
Our Two Grades
Two key choices: drying method, and whole-grass or juice-only. Only the freeze-dried grades are available organic.
| Freeze-Dried Whole-Grass Powder | Spray-Dried Juice Powder | |
|---|---|---|
| Made from | Whole young shoot, milled | Barley grass juice (fibre removed) |
| Drying | Freeze-dried — no heat | Spray-dried with maltodextrin |
| Fibre | Retained | Removed during juicing |
| Chlorophyll & flavonoid retention | High — freeze-drying preserves heat-sensitive pigments[2] | Good — carrier encapsulates and protects[2] |
| Solubility | Disperses; some fibre texture | Dissolves cleanly; ideal for drinks |
| Carrier | None — 100% barley grass | Maltodextrin (declared) |
| Organic | USDA NOP & EU Organic available | Conventional only |
| Single-ingredient label | Yes | No — maltodextrin declared |
Barley Grass Powder vs Barley Grass Juice Powder — What Is the Difference?
Two genuinely different ingredients that are frequently confused.
| Barley Grass Powder | Barley Grass Juice Powder | |
|---|---|---|
| How it’s made | Whole shoot dried and milled — juice, fibre, cell wall all included | Juice extracted first, fibre removed, then spray-dried |
| Fibre | High | Very low — removed in juicing |
| Solubility | Disperses; some texture from fibre | Dissolves cleanly; smooth in drinks |
| Nutrient concentration | Whole-plant profile; fibre dilutes soluble nutrients per gram | More concentrated in chlorophyll and soluble nutrients per gram |
| Label | Barley grass powder (single ingredient) | Barley grass juice powder + maltodextrin |
| Best for | Capsules, tablets, whole-food blends | Beverages, instant mixes, aojiru-style products |
Colour, Chlorophyll & Harvest Timing
Barley grass colour comes from chlorophyll, peaking in young shoots harvested before the jointing stage (typically 7–14 days). At this stage the plant also naturally contains saponarin and lutonarin (the characteristic barley-grass flavonoids), GABA, vitamins, and minerals.[1] Chlorophyll is heat-sensitive — freeze-drying preserves colour and flavonoid content significantly better than hot-air drying,[2] while the spray-dried juice grade uses maltodextrin encapsulation to protect pigments and deliver a consistently bright-green, soluble powder.
Nutritional Composition (Naturally Occurring)
Naturally occurring ranges from the peer-reviewed literature — not standardized guaranteed values; levels vary with harvest stage, cultivar, and drying method.
| Naturally occurring component | Notes on composition |
|---|---|
| Chlorophyll | Dominant pigment; peaks at early harvest stage. Freeze-drying retains more than heat-based methods.[1] |
| Flavonoids — saponarin & lutonarin | The two characteristic C-glycosyl flavones of barley grass, not found at comparable levels in most other greens. Levels vary by cultivar and harvest timing.[1] |
| GABA & vitamins (A, C, E, B1) | GABA naturally present in young shoots; vitamins A and C are heat-sensitive and better retained in freeze-dried grades.[1] |
| Minerals (K, Ca, Mg, Fe) | Young shoots are naturally rich in potassium and calcium; relatively stable across drying methods. |
| Dietary fibre & protein | Fibre present in whole-grass grades only — removed during juicing. Protein naturally present at meaningful levels in young shoots. |
Gluten — What You Need to Know
Barley is a gluten-containing grain, but barley grass is harvested before grain formation — the young shoot does not yet contain the hordein proteins that develop in the mature seed. Most certified barley grass powders test below the 20 ppm gluten-free threshold. Cross-contamination at the growing or processing stage is still possible, so if a certified gluten-free claim is required on your finished product, request lot-level test results confirming <20 ppm. We can provide this data on request.
Applications by Category
- Greens & superfood blends: backbone ingredient in multi-greens formulas, often combined with wheatgrass, spirulina, and chlorella; freeze-dried for whole-food blends, juice powder for smooth-mixing instant formats
- Capsules & tablets: freeze-dried and organic grades for supplement formats; high chlorophyll and flavonoid content supports a strong single-ingredient greens capsule
- Functional beverages & aojiru drinks: juice powder dissolves cleanly for Japanese-style aojiru, instant sachets, and RTD green beverages
- Smoothie mixes & drink powders: vivid green colour and grassy character for premium smoothie blends
- Natural green colour: chlorophyll-based green for clean-label applications at neutral to mildly alkaline pH — bench-test colour stability at working pH
- Bakery & functional foods: green-tinted breads, pasta, and snacks; colour mutes under heat — expected, not a defect
Sourcing & QC Criteria
| Parameter | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Harvest stage | Young shoot before jointing; confirmed on COA | Determines chlorophyll, flavonoid, and GABA levels |
| Product type | Whole-grass (fibre intact) vs juice powder (maltodextrin carrier) | Different composition, solubility, and label declaration |
| Chlorophyll | Reported per lot as naturally occurring | Primary visual quality indicator |
| Gluten | <20 ppm if gluten-free claim required | Facility cross-contamination risk must be controlled |
| Moisture & aW | <5% moisture; aW <0.4 | Shelf life, caking, microbial safety |
| Organic certification | USDA NOP / EU Organic — freeze-dried grades only | Source farm and processing facility both must be certified |
| Heavy metals & pesticides | ICP-MS (Pb, As, Cd, Hg); multi-residue screen per destination MRLs | Mandatory for EU, US, Japan market entry |
| Microbiological | TPC, yeast & mould, E. coli, Salmonella | Core food-safety compliance |
Regulatory Guidance
- United States (FDA): barley grass powder is used as a food and dietary supplement ingredient under DSHEA. FDA does not “approve” food ingredients — claims of “FDA approved” barley grass are inaccurate. Gluten-free claims require <20 ppm testing per 21 CFR 101.91.
- European Union: barley grass has a history of food use in the EU and is not a novel food. Organic grades require EU 2018/848 certification. Health claims must be drawn from the EU authorised claims register (Regulation (EC) 1924/2006).
- China: young barley shoots are an established food raw material. Exported product complies with GB standards; organic certificates provided where required.
